The first thing you have to learn if the area is still wet, is to try to absorb as much of the dog urine as possible. You should never let the urine dry out on the floor or carpet as it only encourages bacterial growth. This in turn leads to a stronger stench from the dog urine.

The best way to dry out urine is to absorb as much of it by placing numerous layers of paper towels. Try to absorb as much dog urine as you can. Repeat the above procedure several time till there is no urine to soak.

Use black light to locate dried urine

There may be times when you are not aware of dog urine accidents. You will not be able to locate the urine spot as it would have dried. In such situations, use the help of a black light. Dog urine stains tend to fluoresce under the UV light of the black light in a dark room. Moreover, these hand held black lights are cheap; around $20.

The next step in the dog urine odor removal process is to mix a 50-50% solution of white vinegar and water. Using a scrubbing brush, work the solution into the carpet so that it reaches the bottom of carpet fibbers.

Once again, this area has to be blotted using paper towels. You can use a wet and dry vacuum extractor for removing any excess moisture that you cannot reach. The dog urine gets neutralised with the ammonia found in dog urine.

Sprinkle some baking soda on the area when you are sure the area is dry. Then, mix a teaspoon of detergent with half a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Make sure the detergent you use is not a caustic dishwasher detergent.

This mixture has to be poured over the baking soda using a pair of rubber gloves. Using your fingers, and then a scrubbing brush, work the baking soda into the carpet. Once again, let the place dry completely and then vacuum.

You can always use some spray laundry stain remover if you don’t have any hydrogen peroxide. These stain removers that are labeled ‘oxy’ usually have hydrogen peroxide in them.

Repeat the process

You should be able to remove dog urine from carpet by now; however in areas with heavily soiled dog urine, you may have to repeat the process. Just remember not to use ammonia or products with it to remove dog urine from carpets. This is because one of the ingredients of urine is ammonia.

So if you use this product to clean dog urine, your dog may get encouraged to once again pass urine on detecting ammonia smell. So check labels of household cleaners before using them as most of them contain ammonia. This process of dog urine odor removal can also be used to remove any dog urine accidents on mattresses too.
